Today I read article about Classroom Management and Discipline in the ESL Classroom. The best way to deal with discipline issues in the EFL classroom is to have a good lesson that is active and encourages the participation of every student in the room. An active student is not usually a problem student. In this article have some common problems to be found in an ESL class and ways to solve them.
When Students Keep Using their Native Language teachers must emphasize that regular use of a student's language means that learning English will be slower and that they are missing out on valuable opportunities to use English in authentic situations. They can encourage students to use English orally by explaining that all other activities can be in their language at certain times but that oral activities must always be in English.
If the student is shy, is being dominated or intimidated by other students teacher must using pair work helps to get quiet students talking as they are under less pressure in small groups. Teachers can also allow them to write down what they are going to say before they say it so that the risk element a spontaneous response requires is removed.
Students do not feel like working. They may find the topic uninteresting. Teacher should a juicy, well-pitched theme chosen according to students' interests or experience will motivate them automatically. The age and culture of students needs to be taken into account when choosing a theme.
The activities, students can be given a non-production role or acting as a teacher's assistant instead of participating in the exercise.
Teachers need to be fair and friendly at the same time to control of a class.
